This is a hand crafted replica doll from 16th Century England. She was purchased from Quartermasterie, a historical re-enactment supplier that uses only authentic materials and methods to recreate products from the past. The doll has been lovingly hand sewn as it would have been in the past from scraps of natural materials: a beige linen body with embroidered eyes and mouth. Her nose is cleverly and simply made by sewing the material in a little “pinch" or gather. Her clothes are made of soft white linen and brown wool. She has brown leather shoes and calf high white socks held up with little garters.
This doll represents a modestly dressed Puritan woman, with a brown dress, white apron, under bonnet/wimple, and white starched bonnet.
Dolls (or rag babies) have been made for centuries from scraps of materials left over from the cloth bought to make clothes.
