This little toy cow is made from green/grey cotton covering a string structure. The toy has a harness and ankle bracelets made from silver ribbon and the cream cotton coat on its back is decorated with embroidery and shisha mirror work. The eyes are pink beads.
In Hindu society cows are honoured and considered to be holy. The gentle nature of the cow represents one of the main teachings in Hinduism which is ahimsa or non injury. There is even a cow festival - Gopastami in which cows are honoured, and dressed in garlands and special jewellery. Gopastami celebrates the day in Hindu mythology when Lord Krishna became a cowherder, experienced enough to take care of adult cattle, not just calves.
