A pennant flag is a long tapering triangular shape. Its origin is
nautical and different sizes and patterns were used for signalling or
identification at sea. It is the identification role that is picked up
in these two sporting flags. They are the emblems of a major US American
football team - the Dallas Cowboys, and the San Francisco Giants
baseball team.
The Dallas Cowboys pennant represents the year in
which they became 28th Super Bowl champions, 1994. You can see the
Roman numerals on this flag which represent the number 28. It is
interesting to think about the way in which the triangular shape
influences the design.
Pennants of this kind are produced as emblems for many sporting and
other events and become commercial collectable items. Do you have flags
at home to represent the sport teams that you support?
The Super Bowl is one of the most important sporting fixtures
in the American calendar and is the play off match to determine the
winner of the National Football League (NFL). It happens in January or
February every year and has the biggest television coverage of any
American sport.
Maybe you could design a pennant for your school
team – this will help you to consider the way in which the name and
other information has to be fitted into the rather awkward triangular
shape.
