Banana Leaf Football, Uganda

This football is from Uganda and it is made of dried banana leaves bound together with mesh that is also made from banana leaves. Bananas are a staple local crop consumed by most households, so the dried leaves provide a freely available way of making a strong football. The leaves are wound on themselves to build a slightly irregular football shape.

Football, and in particular the British premier league, is widely followed in Uganda as it is in many other countries in Africa. It is often claimed that football is the universal language and is talked about all over the world. Children are keen to play in their leisure time both in school and on the way to school. The ground is often rough and so these sturdy balls are long lasting and easy to replace. Many children will play with this ball without wearing shoes which would be hard on the feet of children who are used to wearing football boots.
