There are more than 250 tribes living in Nigeria, each of which has
its own specific culture. The man's costume shown here is the
ASO-OKE, the traditional costume of the Yoruba. Aso-oke cloth is
woven on narrow looms, most notably in Oyo State and Kogi
State.
This outfit is made from alternate strips of brown fabric, which
has a fine silver stripe (like a pin-stripe) running through it,
and white and silver fabric. Each strip is 10cm wide. The strips
have been assembled to make wide trousers, a loose fitting top that
falls to mid thigh or knee length and a small cap. There are large
patch pockets on the tunic. The cuffs, pockets and neckline of the
tunic, the hems of the trousers and the border of the cap are
decorated with machine-embroidery that builds up a checkerboard
pattern in white and black thread. The outfit is made from cotton
fabric, with metallic thread.
